There are many rock festivals in the world. However, Roskilde, a small village near the south coast in Denmark, has something extraordinary. This festival has existed for almost 50 years and has made a name for itself during this time. The cult festival has always offered indie, rock, cult bands, and hip hop. The performing bands are the members of the music elite such as Metallica, The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Talking Heads, or Bob Marley and many other famous names. They all performed at this festival and made the legendary shows. To perform on a stage at the festival of Roskilde is like an accolade. The organizers are relying on a concept that is nothing but unique because all money is donated to charity after the festival.
The 50th Aniversary in 2021
The first time this festival was opened to the audience in August of 1971. A handful of young people organized the first event and called it the Sound Festival. The first try attracted over 10,000 peopleA world hit developed from this early success. After the foundation of the non-profit organization Foreningen Roskildefonden, the organizers extended the festival up to 3 days and recruited volunteers. That laid the foundation for Roskilde Festival. International stars quickly became aware of this, as a result, Bob Marley performed here in 1978. Electronic sounds have also found their permanent place on the stage of Roskilde since 1990. Fatboy Slim and The Prodigy came to Denmark and seamlessly joined the list of the stars.
Eight Days Of Partying
The festival certainly has weird traditions to offer. That includes, for example, the traditional nude run on Saturday, which has been taking place since 1999. The male and female winners can win one ticket for the next year. That already proves that partying is hip around the clock in Roskilde. Flunkyball is another popular attraction. Two teams compete against each other. If you hit the opponent’s cup of beer with your ball, you can drink your own. So the Danes show once again that they know how to party in a wild style.
This Marathon Takes Perseverance
In the meantime, the Roskilde Festival has been extended up to eight days. More than 130 000 annual visitors experience up to 180 different acts. This music marathon demands a lot of stamina from the visitors. There are many ways to get here. The festival now even has its train station. However, many fans still travel by car. Camping is a big issue here. It’s at least as exciting as the festival itself. There’s always something going on in the camping place. Many options are offered, so you can rent a place in a sleep-in bus in advance, but of course, also a fixed location for your tent is possible. Alternatively, visitors can register their own mobile home or book a tent house. That includes, for example, electric light and comfortable mattresses.
